ACTIVITY UPDATE
Chinese New Year falls on 7th February this year. The most recent updates on this site were done to mark that event. 2008 is year of the Rat, the start of a 12 year cycle. The Chinese calendar has a 60 year cycle. There are 12 'signs' - and there are FIVE ELEMENTS, alternating each year to be either Ying or Yang. This year it is the time for Yang Earth Rat. An auspicious time for starting afresh as the Rat is considered the first in the cycle. 12 years ago it was Yang Fire Rat. I began teaching Tai Chi and opened my first dojo that year. This year ... it is this website and friendships within the Buddha Sangha that I shall be concentrating upon.

The Lantern Festival occurs on the first full moon following the new moon of Chinese New Year. Every year, usually the weekend after Lanterns we celebrate this passage here at the dojo not only to mark these lunar phases but also because it is the dojo's anniversary. It first opened its doors on Valentines Day (14th Feb) 1996; just 5 days before that years Chinese New Year.

These celebratory or observance events (up 'till now our only annual event - but that may soon change) usually include workshops, talks, demos or guest speakers and normally end with some kind of social event, party or entertainment. Sometimes the theme is Tai Chi (as in 2005) and at other times it is Buddhist (as in 2004).Occasional the two interests are combined (as in 2007). This year it takes the form of a busman's holiday and four of us from SSS are visiting The Fo Guang Shan He Hua Temple.

The primary purpose of the trip is to produce an article for publication later on this website.
